From Water to the World

Seeing baptism as new life that sends us into Jesus' mission.

Jesus in a Bottle
Jesus in a Bottle Part 6

Sermon Notes

Message overview

In Part 6 of Jesus in a Bottle, Pastor John connects baptism and mission. The real Jesus does not save us so we can sit still. He saves us, makes us new, and sends us into the world with the gospel.

Preached on a baptism Sunday with missionary stories woven throughout, this message shows that baptism is both a public proclamation of salvation and a call into the mission of Jesus.

Scripture focus

  • Matthew 28:18-20 – Jesus commands His followers to go, make disciples, baptize, and teach.
  • Acts 2:36 – Jesus is both Lord and Christ.
  • Romans 6:4 – Baptism pictures burial with Christ and resurrection into new life.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 – Anyone in Christ is a new creation.
  • Matthew 5:14-16 – The church is called to be light in the world.

Sermon notes

1. The real Jesus saves and sends

Jesus does not exist to grant our wishes. He rescues us from sin, becomes King and Lord of our lives, transforms us, and sends us to others who need the same hope.

When we encounter the true Jesus, the natural response is obedience.

2. Baptism is a proclamation

Baptism is not required for salvation, but it is an act of obedience. It publicly declares, “I am with Jesus.” Going under the water pictures burial with Christ; coming up pictures resurrection into new life.

3. Baptism is the beginning, not the end

Too many people treat baptism like a finish line. Pastor John framed it as the beginning of a life on mission. Jesus saves us and then sends us into the world He loves.

4. Mission belongs to every believer

The Great Commission is not only for pastors, leaders, or overseas missionaries. It belongs to everyone who follows Jesus. Most mission will not happen from a stage; it will happen with neighbors, coworkers, family, friends, students, and people in need.

5. The church participates in mission together

Pastor John shared stories from Costa Rica, Cru campus ministry, prison and rehab ministry, and local church life. When the church supports and sends people, the church participates in the mission field with them.

6. The mission field is here too

Mission is not only overseas. It is Costa Mesa, Orange County, life groups, care for the hurting, meals, mentoring, worship, discipleship, and everyday faithfulness. The church is sent wherever its people go.

Core truth

Jesus saves us into new life and sends us into His mission.

Reflection questions

  1. Have I treated salvation or baptism as an endpoint instead of a beginning?
  2. Where has Jesus already placed me as a missionary?
  3. Who in my life needs to hear or see the hope of Jesus through me?
  4. What would obedience to the Great Commission look like in my normal week?

Practice this week

Choose one person in your existing circle – a neighbor, coworker, friend, family member, or classmate – and intentionally pray for them. Then look for one simple way to bring the hope of Jesus through presence, service, invitation, or conversation.
