Pray and Listen

Home Team Movement
Home Team Movement Part 3

Sermon Notes

Current workbook: Genesis Daily Word

Why do we need to step away and pray? Jesus shows us that prayer is not an emergency measure. It is a steady habit that keeps us close to the Father, clear about our purpose, and ready to surrender our will to His. Even when everyone was looking for Him, Jesus made room to pray.

Quick recap

  • Jesus withdrew to pray as a regular habit, not only during a crisis.
  • He stepped away before major decisions, after success, in grief, when offered power, and when rest was needed.
  • Solitude and the Lord’s Prayer belong together: Jesus first teaches us to shut the door, then teaches us how to pray.
  • The Lord’s Prayer forms six postures in us: relationship, worship, surrender, dependence, forgiveness, and protection.
  • This week’s practice is simple: choose a time and place, shut the door, pray slowly, and live the prayer at home.

Full message notes

Why did Jesus step away when everyone was looking for Him?

Read: Mark 1:33–37; Luke 4:42–43.

After a demanding night of healing and ministry, Jesus rose early, went to a solitary place, and prayed. When His disciples found Him, they told Him that everyone was looking for Him. Jesus did not allow the loudest demand to define His purpose. Time with the Father kept Him centered on why He had been sent.

Our lives carry different names and demands—family, work, messages, responsibilities, and people who need us—but the pressure is familiar. Jesus’ example invites us to step away before we are emptied by everything pulling at us.

When did Jesus make room to pray?

Read: Luke 5:15–16; Luke 6:12–13; Mark 1:33–37; Matthew 14:12–13; John 6:15; Mark 6:31.

Prayer was Jesus’ pattern. He withdrew before a major decision, after success, in grief, when people wanted to make Him king, and when rest was needed. Different seasons brought different pressures, but Jesus made the same move: He stepped away to pray.

Why do solitude and the Lord’s Prayer belong together?

Read: Luke 11:1; Matthew 6:6, 9–13.

The disciples watched Jesus pray before they asked Him to teach them. In Matthew 6, Jesus first tells His followers to go into a room, shut the door, and pray to the Father in secret. Then He gives the pattern we call the Lord’s Prayer. Solitude quiets the need to perform for other people so our attention can return to the Father.

Six postures of the Lord’s Prayer

1. Relationship — “Our Father in heaven”

Read: Matthew 6:9; Romans 5:8; Luke 15:20; Psalm 103:13.

Prayer begins with who God is and who we are to Him. Jesus says our Father. This is a family prayer: give us, forgive us, lead us, and deliver us. We come to a compassionate Father who moved toward us first.

2. Worship — “Hallowed be your name”

Read: Matthew 6:9; Psalm 34:3.

Before making a request, we honor God’s name. Worship puts God first and reminds us that prayer begins with His character, not our list of needs.

3. Surrender — “Your kingdom come, your will be done”

Read: Matthew 6:10, 33; Matthew 26:39, 42.

Surrender puts God’s kingdom before our own. Jesus did not merely teach these words; He prayed them in Gethsemane when obedience cost Him everything.

4. Dependence — “Give us this day our daily bread”

Read: Matthew 6:11, 34; Exodus 16:4, 19–20.

Jesus teaches us to trust God for today’s portion. Like Israel receiving daily manna, we learn dependence one day at a time instead of trying to control every tomorrow.

5. Forgiveness — “Forgive us … as we also have forgiven”

Read: Matthew 6:12, 14–15; Colossians 3:13.

Forgiveness is the one part of the prayer Jesus immediately explains. We ask to receive mercy while becoming people who extend mercy. The grace we have received reshapes how we respond to the people closest to us.

6. Protection — “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”

Read: Matthew 6:13; 1 Corinthians 10:12–13; Matthew 26:41.

This final posture admits that we cannot fight temptation alone. We ask God to direct our steps, show us the way of escape, and rescue us from evil.

Practice this week

Choose one daily time and one quiet place. Leave the phone outside, shut the door, and pray through the six postures slowly. Pause wherever the prayer exposes a need, a fear, a relationship, or an area of surrender. Then bring the prayer home by living it with the people around you.

Communion: the cup and surrender

Read: Matthew 26:27–28, 39; 1 Corinthians 11:28.

At the table, Jesus gave His disciples the cup of the covenant. In the garden, He prayed about the cup that awaited Him and surrendered to the Father’s will. Communion invites us to remember His sacrifice, examine ourselves, receive forgiveness, and follow His surrendered way.
