We Are Them: From Hosanna to Crucify — A Holy Week Reality Check
The Tension of Holy Week
One week. Two completely different responses.
“Hosanna!” → “Crucify Him!”
Same city. Same people. Same Jesus.
➡️ What changed?
What “Hosanna” Really Meant
“Save us now”
A cry for immediate rescue
Expectation of a political, powerful Messiah
➡️ The crowd wasn’t wrong to hope—they were wrong about how Jesus would save.
When Expectations Don’t Match Reality
Palm Sunday: Jesus looks like the Messiah they wanted
Good Friday: Jesus looks nothing like the Messiah they expected
➡️ Their hope turned into disappointment.
Jesus Doesn’t Fit Our Box
We often define Jesus by:
Our culture
Our politics
Our personal preferences
But Jesus is:
Holy
Merciful
Gracious
Compassionate
➡️ He rises above every label we try to give Him.
The Hard Truth: We Are the Crowd
We like to think we would’ve stayed faithful.
But in reality:
We praise when life makes sense
We question when it doesn’t
We doubt when God is silent
➡️ Our response to Jesus is often tied to our expectations.
I See Me in the Crowd
“Jesus, where are You?”
“Why aren’t You fixing this?”
“Do You even care?”
➡️ When Jesus doesn’t meet expectations:
Excitement → Confusion
Confusion → Disappointment
Disappointment → Frustration
And eventually:
“Hosanna” becomes “Crucify Him”
Religious Effort Isn’t Enough
Even with:
Discipline
Sacrifice
Good intentions
➡️ We can still reject Jesus when He doesn’t align with what we want.
Step Out of the Crowd
Stop trying to shape Jesus into your expectations
Start trusting Him for who He is
➡️ Faith is not about control—it’s about surrender.
Final Thought
We are more like the crowd than we think
But the story doesn’t end there
➡️ Sunday is coming
