The Home Team (Part 2): A Culture of Honor

Sermon Notes

Big Idea

Honor is how we ascribe value to others. Scripture shows honor isn’t optional—it’s a core marker of spiritual maturity and healthy relationships.

Key Scriptures

  • Romans 12:10 — “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”

  • Exodus 20:12 — “Honor your father and your mother… so that you may have a long life…” (the commandment with a promise)

Why Honor Matters

  • Honor and obedience run together—God cares deeply about how we treat people as much as how we obey Him.

  • A culture of honor pushes back against division and restores dignity in homes, churches, and communities.

Where Honor Starts

Honor is established first in the home (whatever “home” looks like in your season), then it flows into the church, and out into the world.

Practical Honor in the Home

Honor your spouse

  • Husbands: cherish her, protect her heart, listen (not always solve), value her openly.

  • Wives: speak life (not constant criticism), respect him, pray with him, communicate “I believe in you.”

Honor your children

  • Slow down and truly see them.

  • Speak identity and value over them.

  • Discipline with love and boundaries (boundaries bring security).

  • Refuse shame-filled words—kids internalize them.

Honor your father and mother

  • Honor doesn’t always mean closeness.

  • Even with painful history, you can honor their place, keep wise boundaries, and choose respectful speech.

Honor roommates, neighbors, and those around you

  • Clean up after yourself, communicate, practice generosity and patience.

  • Be present, kind, and a peacemaker. Live in a way that blesses the people God has placed near you.

Jesus’ Model of Honor

Jesus honored the Samaritan woman at the well by breaking cultural, racial, and moral barriers. He:

  1. spoke with dignity,

  2. treated her as worth knowing,

  3. offered living water (new life).

When shame is replaced with value, people change—and the natural overflow becomes testimony and mission.

Building a Culture of Honor at Pacific Point Church

  • Welcome people warmly, learn names, include those who are new or alone.

  • Encourage someone every Sunday.

  • Serve without needing to be asked.

  • Celebrate others’ wins, gifts, and growth with a thankful heart.

A Moment of Honor

The message included intentional gratitude and honor for many who quietly serve and strengthen the church family—reminding us that honor should be practiced, not just preached.

Communion Response

Before receiving communion, we were invited to examine our hearts:

  • Am I honoring people in my home? In my church?

  • If not, repent and start now—God forgives and gives wisdom to rebuild.

Takeaway

If we want strong homes and a strong church, we need both: consistency in our walk with Jesus and a culture of honor in how we treat others.
